Xander Mom: Jean Olivier

Tell us about yourself?

I am the mother of two children, aged 2 years and 5 months old, based in the beautiful city of Cape Town. Before becoming a mom, I worked in the public relations & travel industry, which sparked my love for travel as well as the desire to share what I had experienced on these travels through writing. Motherhood has given me a completely fresh perspective (and appreciation) on traveling, exploring and writing and is the reason I feel so passionate about sharing my blog with other moms and the like.

Tell us about your blog

As a mom, I realized that I wanted to make discovering new things, and places easier for other moms by sharing my experiences. This includes finding child-friendly places, such as wine estates; trying recipes that my children will love, featuring other moms who are entrepreneurs and products that make being a mom just a little easier. I started my blog, www.mommyexplores.com, when my youngest child was born in June 2017 and I look forward to watching both grow into all that they can be.

How do you feel about using technology as part of learning?

I think there is definitely a time and a place for technology. As with everything in life, in moderation.

What are your kids favourite apps?

My kids are still a bit young for apps so we have not really explored them as yet but I am sure there are really good ones.

What do you love about South Africa and raising your children here?

South Africa is a beautiful country and its people are so friendly. I am grateful that my kids can experience living here. However, given the opportunity, I would just as easily live in another country so that they can experience those cultures and way of life. Like I said, travel is in my blood and I love to explore.

TV “Yes” or “No”?

Yes, as much as you don’t want to. But I try limit it as much as possible.

What is in the lunchbox?

Usually a peanut butter sarmie, with a fruit of some sort and yoghurt.

How do you balance it all – in one sentence?

Knowing that “this too shall pass” & wine.

Do you children do chores at home, if so what and how do you manage it?

Not “chores” just yet, but my eldest must pack her toys / books away and help tidy up.

What is your favourite holiday plans/ activities with kids?

I have a list as long as my arm for holiday plans – I love to travel and explore so anything that involves that. There are so many fantastic places in and around Cape Town to take the kids during the school holidays, you cannot actually ever be bored. But, International travel is also high up on my list.
