Heading into the school holidays soon and having looked at fun family activities and outings in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, it’s time to look at what Durban has to offer.

uShaka Marine World

uShaka Marine World is an incredible family fun day with many activities including water shows, rides, aquatic conservation workshops and even birthday parties. It’s an exciting and educational place for both kids and parents. A must do if you live in or are visiting Durban.

 

Durban Minitown

Minitown is a mini city in Durban. It is one of Durban’s iconic beachfront tourist attractions. It is a replica of Durban. Minitown is a major fund raising tool for the Quadriplegic Association of KwaZulu-Natal. Minitown is for the young at heart, and makes an excellent family outing. It is a good way to spend some quality time with you little ones as both you and your children will be amazed at this city within a city.

 

KZN Shark Board

The KwaZulu Natal Shark Board is a great place for children and adults to learn about the lives, environments and the conservation and protection of sharks living along the coast of Durban and surrounding areas. This is a perfect outing for kids who care about nature and want to get involved in nature conservation.

 

Durban Museum of Natural History

This museum is the most utilised natural science museum in the country and is located in the Durban City Hall. Visit the boma storytelling area, see a life size reconstruction of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, various diorama exhibitions and plasma screens showing natural history scenery. The Museum Research Centre also offers the public access to the third largest collection of birds in Africa. A perfect family outing.

Galleria Ice Rink

A trip to the ice rink is always fun and a bit of a workout and when the weather is warm and humid, it’s the perfect place to cool down. Kids and parents can enjoy a few spins around the rink.

Umgeni River Bird Park

This bird park is all about educating people about different species of birds, their environments, the food they eat, their protection from extinction and harm by humans and rehabilitation and conservation of birdlife in Southern Africa. This is a wonderful place for kids and parents to learn.

 

Durban Botanic Gardens

Like any botanical garden, Durban’s Botanic Garden is perfect for a family picnic or walk amongst nature. Many rare and endangered plant and flower species are protected her and are on display for all to enjoy. There are also a list of musical events that take place throughout the year, which can be viewed on the website. We highly recommend a trip to these gardens for some quality family time.

 

Gateway Wavehouse

The Wave House located at Gateway’s Theatre of Shopping and is an awesome fusion of all boardsport cultures, providing the ultimate place for the cool youth hang out and fun space for the kids. There is action all round, with unmatched entertainment from live bands to the spectacular events staged at this hi-tech venue.
