Most of us have spent weeks planning, budgeting and making gift lists for the festive season. But while we were planning to buy or make something totally appropriate and spot-on, somebody out there has been eyeing the lavender soaps, or going through the bottom of the re-gifting drawer in anticipation of the season. Let’s look at what not to give this season (or ever), and heave a sigh of relief that we aren’t the recipients of some of these peculiar and inappropriate gifts.

According to a recent article in Cosmopolitan 49 % percent of women regift unwanted presents. Of course, regifting can sometimes be a good idea, perhaps if you have received duplicate gifts, or something that you know would be more appreciated by someone else. So if you already have a tin of festive cookies, then by all means – spread the love and pass the surplus goodies on to a colleague or friend. Items such as cookies, chocolate or wine are reasonably generic, and most people would welcome them as gifts, but do be careful of personalised or novelty items. Chances are that they have a smaller potential audience, and might not be so welcome. Of course the ultimate no-no of regifting is giving the unwanted gift back to the recipient, so keep track of gifts if you are planning to pass them on. Experts at the New York Times also warn that you should check the gift for tell-tale cards or price tags that might be hidden in the packaging before you deliver them.
